City of Waukegan, IL

East Reservoir Repairs & Mixing Equipment Improvements

A closer look

Project description

The City of Waukegan Water Filtration Plant was built in 1928 and included two treated water reservoirs constructed with cast-in-place concrete. The East Reservoir was isolated from the rest of the plant during maintenance of valves enabling draining and cleaning for dry inspection and wet down testing.

The overall condition of the 92-year-old reservoir was fair to poor. There were multiple areas with spalled concrete, corroded reinforcing steel and numerous cracks in the concrete floor, walls and roof with ground water infiltration at some locations.

Rehabilitation work is being completed by Baxter & Woodman/Boller using the design-build delivery system. Improvements include: installation of dewatering wells, removal and disposal of soil material and roofing on reservoir, partial depth concrete patching, crack injection, installation of tapered insulation and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) roofing on top of the roof slab, and replacement of hatches and vents.
